E+ HOMES : 64 CATHERINE STREET “E+ Housing can be constructed sustainably and
cost-effectively, while enhancing the livability of
Boston's neighborhoods now and into the
future” - THOMAS MENINO, MAYOR OF BOSTON
64 Catherine Street is part of the Energy + Green Building Competition initiated by the City of Boston. Urbanica and Studio Luz Architects proposed a pair of townhouses that negotiate the corner condition of a triangular site. The project introduces the townhouse type to the Jamaica Plain Woodbourne neighborhood, contributing to the diversity of homes in the area while remaining respectful of the existing neighborhood character. The building consists of two typical units, approximately 1,500sf each, mirrored about the central parti wall. Variations in proportion and scale are developed in response to the unique triangular site configuration. We see this as a soft prototype, where the spatial layout and systems of a basic unit can be adapted to fit the specific demands of different sites, contexts and micro‐climates.
